New Symphony Orchestra announces the winner of the Competition
for composition of a piece for a symphony orchestra
by a Bulgarian composer, who is
Mr. Lyubomir Denev
The competition is under the Honorary Patronage
of H. E. Jeremy and Katie Hill
The winner of the competition was announced on February 4th's concert,
personally by H. E. Jeremy Hill, Ambassador of Great Britain. The prize
is 5 000 leva for composing a piece, which world's premiere will be held
during the 2007/2008 Concert Season of the New Symphony Orchestra.
Any composer who is a Bulgarian citizen was eligible to participate in
the competition. An international jury under the chairmanship of Maestro
Rossen Milanov judged the pieces. Upon reviewing the materials sent by
the participants, the jury selected from 17 applicants Mr. Denev to be
commissioned to write a piece for orchestra.
For the Chairman of the jury, Rossen Milanov, Season 2006/2007
is tenth as a Music Director of the New Symphony Orchestra He is also
Associate Conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Artistic Director of
the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Mann Center for the Performing Arts,
Music Director of the Haddonfield Symphony Orchestra and Chief Conductor
of the Bulgarian National Radio Orchestra. Rosen Milanov is one of the
most successful conductors in the world who has conducted in the most
prestigious concert halls in Europe and America, Asia and New Zealand.
Peter Ash has worked with orchestras including Royal Philharmonic
Orchestra, London Sinfonietta. Bournemouth Sinfonietta. Scottish Opera.
Scottish Chamber Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland. Nieuw
Belgisch Kammerorkest, Ensemble Oriol and Kammerphilharmonie Berlin. He
has made recordings for the BBC. RTE, Spanish National Radio, SFB German
Radio and a television concert with Nieuw Sinfonietta Amsterdam in Holland.
Ash is committed to broadening the boundaries of orchestral music for
young people. As composer and arranger, Ash has also written for television
and theater.
Jennifer Hidgon is one of America's most frequently performed
composers. Her works have been recorded on over two dozen CDs. In 2004,
the Atlanta Symphony released the Grammy-winning Higdon: Concerto for
Orchestra/City Scape. In fall of 2006, NAXOS released a recording of Higdon's
chamber works. At the same time, Cedille released a recording of Zaka,
performed by eighth blackbird, and Crystal Records released a recording
of DASH, performed by the Verdehr Trio.
Higdon enjoys more than 200 performances a year of her works. Her work
blue cathedral is one of the most-performed orchestral works by a living
composer.
